The design of “Planbooks” from The Adjustment Bureau

The design of "Planbooks" from The Adjustment Bureau

I watched the (very underrated) Adjustment Bureau last night and was struck by the fantastic animated ‘planbooks’ supposedly created by ‘The Chairman’ which map out an individual’s path through life. I don’t want to spoil the film, so won’t go into the detail of how it unfolds, but I was intrigued enough by the beautiful illustrated [...]

Tempelhof Park, Gross.Max

Tempelhof Park, Gross.Max

I haven’t seen much coverage of this yet, but I’m sure more will appear soon. Gross.Max recently won a huge competition to design the new park at Berlin’s former Tempelhof airport grounds. This article in Progetti (I think?!) gets a reasonably readable translation via google. Update: Some more background in the Scotsman.

The Lost World

George Monbiot continues to be one of only a few voices who articulate the clear conflicts in discussions over future energy. His latest column is a must-read and although extremely challenging, it highlights the difficult changes to our belief systems which are critical if we are to get through this energy crisis.

Back to the (concrete) future

Back to the (concrete) future

Not sure when these were originally shot, but photographer Jan Kempenaers has taken a tour of WWII sites in former Yugoslavia to record  the decaying but fantastic concrete sculptures of the 60s and 70s. Some further details from a website called Crack Two These structures were commissioned by former Yugoslavian president Josip Broz Tito in [...]

OMA to strategize new housing in Bordeaux

Bordeaux really seems to be on top of its game when it comes to large scale, infrastructural planning and design: I understand the tram system is a roaring success and was used to drive a number of smaller scale public realm improvements; they aren’t afraid to be challenged by the likes of OMA; and they [...]

Moving from Blogger to WordPress

I migrated in April 2010 from Blogger (updating via FTP) to WordPress. Any oddness you may find is purely a result of my less than complete grasp of the intricacies of this process and for that I apologise!

Rick Joy in Vermont

A fantastic house by Rick Joy in Woodstock, Vermont. I worked on a competition with Rick when I worked at Olin Partnership – we worked out of his studio in Tucson on a concept for the canal system in Phoenix. He worked as a cabinet maker before training as an architect in his early thirties [...]

MA(Hons) dissertation

Not just one, but two masters dissertations online in the space of as many months! I finally got round to scanning my old landscape architecture dissertation (having had the digital copy nicked in a burglary in 2001 along with my entire final year portfolio, but that is a whole other sad story…) and bunged it [...]

master of architecture dissertation now online

I finally got round to updating my MArch page on the website, including uploading a pdf of the whole dissertation. Now for my next project…anyone got any suggestions?!

master of architecture dissertation submission!

Submitting my dissertation in the next few days! I’ll put up pdfs of the document shortly…

diploma show opens tonight!

It has been a long and challenging year, definitely full of ups and downs, but it is all over now (bar the Master of Architecture dissertation of course, but that is a whole different story!) and the diploma show opens tonight at eca. Hope to see you there

Washington Monument toured by ASLA

A decent article on the ASLA website recounting a tour given by Laurie Olin (pictured seated) of the Washington Monument grounds. Lots of nice little details noted and explained. “To solve the issue of security, Olin created an oval ha-ha—a wall that supports terraced land, providing a barrier that does not obstruct the view of [...]

The Royal Scottish Academy Student Exhibition 2006

I haven’t posted for a long time due to no internet; moving flat three times in six months; buying, gutting and renovating a flat; multiple part-time jobs; and trying to complete my diploma. Anyway, the Royal Scottish Academy Student Exhibition 2006 opens on Saturday. Did I mention I’m in it? [Royal Scottish Academy]

Back from an epic trip to the Highlands

Robert Simthson’s Floating Island

IMGP5615 Originally uploaded by scottishchris. Got back recently from a whirlwind tour of New York, Philadephia and DC. One of the highlights (after seeing all my good friends of course) was seeing the (up until now unrealised) project by Robert Smithson pictured above.

in Blueprint September 2005 issue

I am thrilled to be in the September 2005 issue of Blueprint (available at all quality bookshops and specialist newsagents!). Featured as part of their “Best of the Architecture Graduates” review of student exhibitions, they visited eca, the Mac, the Bartlett and the AA. Esteemed company. I’ve scanned the relevant pages and they are available [...]

xshop – BArch (Hons) project online

Pretentious title: CHECK Flowery text: CHECK Obscure literary references: CHECK Then it must be an architecture degree project, freshly uploaded. The images are a little faint and don’t really do justice to the final prints which where on some tasty cartridge paper, but they should give a taste for the project. [xshop] {architecture}

black rainbow over edinburgh castle

IMGP5383 Originally uploaded by scottishchris. “At 7pm on Friday 29th July, a black rainbow will explode over Edinburgh’s world-famous castle. The work of internationally-renowned artist Cai Guo-Qiang, Black Rainbow: Explosion Project for Edinburgh uses over two thousand custom-made black firework shells in an impressive one minute display of daytime pyrotechnics.” Fruitmarket Gallery

Washington Monument opens for 4th July celebrations

One of the projects I spent much of my time at Olin Partnership working on has opened to the public for this year’s fourth of July celebrations. I was involved in the project right through the design process but left the US just as construction began. I think the result looks fantastic and the whole [...]
