OBN: New Air Terminal Building at Oban Airport, Connel, Scotland

» September 2003 - June 2004
A tilted green roof of wind-pruned shrubs and sea grasses greets the airport visitor. Prised from the earth, the massive roof is pierced by a simple glass box and a series of rusted steel 'stacks' which tumble down the green incline. Positioned above outdoor spaces at the heart of the building, these apertures draw air, light, rain and ozone into and through the building. Such elemental experiences on the ground prepare the visitor for the air, forging connections between ground and sky, a celebration of the unique qualities of the site as a gateway to the air.

HME: A house for a gardener and a house for a housewife, Craigmillar, Edinburgh

» January - June 2004
"At the invitation of EDI, 36 students of architecture from ECA made propositions for 72 ideal homes at Wauchope Square in Craigmillar. Homes for a colourful mix of fictional characters. The resulting dense urban carpet of houses is predicated on the suspension of guidelines, operational practices and regulations which prevent people living this close together."
From exhibition text "72 propositions for ideal homes"

The gardener inhabits a vertical garden, the housewife a single-level home centred around a private courtyard. Although no space is shared physically between the two clients, visual links are strong between the semi-private spaces of each home. For instance, the housewife may sit in her courtyard and contemplate the jungle-like planted facade of the vertical garden that defines the northern edge of the plot; the gardener may take the morning sun on a viewing terrace on her first floor and contemplate the tree canopy of the courtyard. With carefully positioned and targeted encounters, mutual trust can be encouraged: both parties can freely use their privates spaces without fear of being overlooked, whilst still having the opportunity to use their more exposed public spaces.

» Designed & installed by 3rd year architecture students and Peter Hawley
In October 2003, I joined the 3rd year of the BArch (Hons) in Architecture at eca. The busy year included two architectural design projects and the installation of the exhibition "72 propositions for ideal homes" at the Royal Fine Arts Commission for Scotland.

In June 2004, I was given the Andrew Grant Bequest Fund award for my work and nominated by the school to submit my work for the RIBA President's Bronze Medal for the Best Design Project at Part 1. The completion of the year gave me ARB Part 1 qualification.
